The formula
How final exam targets and weighted averages are computed.
Final Exam Score Needed
Where w is the final exam weight expressed as a decimal (e.g. 25% = 0.25) and (1 − w) is the completed coursework weight.
Weighted Grade Average
Multiply each assignment or category percentage by its syllabus weight, sum the products, and divide by total weight.
Worked examples
Three real student scenarios solved step by step.
Example 1 · Final Target
88% current, want 90%, 25% final
Aiming to pull a B+ up to an A− on the final.
| Calculation | Steps |
|---|---|
| 88 × 0.75 = 66.0 pts | Points locked from 75% coursework. |
| (90 − 66) ÷ 0.25 = 96.0% | Score needed on the final exam. |
Need 96.0% on Final
Example 2 · Safe Margin
93% current, want 90%, 20% final
Checking the cushion needed to keep an A−.
| Calculation | Steps |
|---|---|
| 93 × 0.80 = 74.4 pts | Points locked from 80% coursework. |
| (90 − 74.4) ÷ 0.20 = 78.0% | 78% or higher on the final keeps ≥ 90%. |
Need 78.0% on Final
Example 3 · Weighted Avg
92% (40%), 85% (35%), 90% (25%)
Combining homework, midterms, and final project.
| Calculation | Steps |
|---|---|
| 36.8 + 29.75 + 22.5 = 89.05 | Sum of weighted points. |
| 89.05 ÷ 100 = 89.05% (B+) | Overall weighted course grade. |
89.05% (B+)

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?
Multiply your current grade by the fraction of the class already completed (1 − final weight), subtract that from your target grade, and divide by the final exam weight.
What if my category weights don't add up to 100% yet?
The Weighted Average tab automatically divides by the sum of the weights you enter, giving your true standing on graded work so far.
