The formula
Quality points and credit-weighted GPA equations.
Semester GPA
Multiply the 4.0 point value of each letter grade by the course's credit hours to get Quality Points, then divide by total credit hours.
Cumulative GPA
Combines your existing transcript quality points with your new semester quality points.
Worked examples
Sample semester and cumulative GPA calculations.
Example 1 · 14-Credit Term
A (4cr), A− (3cr), B+ (3cr), A (4cr)
Four courses totaling 14 credits.
| Calculation | Steps |
|---|---|
| 16.0 + 11.1 + 9.9 + 16.0 = 53.0 | Total quality points = 53.0. |
| 53.0 ÷ 14 = 3.79 GPA | Magna Cum Laude range. |
3.79 GPA
Example 2 · Cumulative
3.50 over 30 cr + 3.80 over 15 cr
Updating GPA after 3rd semester.
| Calculation | Steps |
|---|---|
| 105.0 + 57.0 = 162.0 pts | Combined quality points. |
| 162.0 ÷ 45 = 3.60 GPA | New cumulative GPA across 45 credits. |
3.60 Cum. GPA
Example 3 · Straight B+
All B+ across 15 credits
Uniform grade across all courses.
| Calculation | Steps |
|---|---|
| 15 × 3.3 = 49.5 pts | Quality points. |
| 49.5 ÷ 15 = 3.30 GPA | Matches 3.30 grade point value. |
3.30 GPA
