What the categories mean
BMI sorts adults into four bands using the World Health Organization cut-offs. Your result is rounded to one decimal place first, and that rounded value decides the band.
| Category | BMI range | What it generally means |
|---|---|---|
| Underweight | Below 18.5 | Body weight is low for your height. Worth checking nutrition and any unexplained weight loss with a clinician. |
| Healthy weight | 18.5 – 24.9 | The range linked with the lowest overall health risk for most adults. The goal is staying here, not chasing the lowest number. |
| Overweight | 25.0 – 29.9 | Above the healthy range. Small, steady changes to food and activity usually move this band more reliably than crash diets. |
| Obese | 30.0 and above | Risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease rises. A clinician can help with a safe, structured plan. |
The formula
One formula, two unit systems. The imperial version uses the 703 conversion factor so both give the same answer for the same person.
Metric
Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres, squared. A height of 175 cm is 1.75 m, so the divisor is 1.75 × 1.75 = 3.0625.
Imperial
Multiply your weight in pounds by 703, then divide by your total height in inches, squared. Total inches = (feet × 12) + inches.
Worked examples
Three readings, calculated step by step exactly the way the calculator above does it — including rounding to one decimal place before the category is chosen.
Example 1 · Metric
70 kg at 175 cm
A typical adult reading, mid healthy range.
| Calculation | Steps |
|---|---|
| 70 ÷ 1.75² | Height in metres: 175 ÷ 100 = 1.75 m. Squared: 3.0625. 70 ÷ 3.0625 = 22.857… |
| = 22.9 | Rounded to one decimal place. |
Healthy weight
Example 2 · Metric
68 kg at 173 cm
Slightly lighter, slightly shorter — still comfortably healthy.
| Calculation | Steps |
|---|---|
| 68 ÷ 1.73² | Height in metres: 1.73 m. Squared: 2.9929. 68 ÷ 2.9929 = 22.720… |
| = 22.7 | Rounded to one decimal place. |
Healthy weight
Example 3 · Metric
45 kg at 166 cm
A reading below the healthy band.
| Calculation | Steps |
|---|---|
| 45 ÷ 1.66² | Height in metres: 1.66 m. Squared: 2.7556. 45 ÷ 2.7556 = 16.331… |
| = 16.3 | Rounded to one decimal place. |

How to use this calculator
Enter your name (optional)
Type your name in the Your name field if you want it printed on the result. It is never required, and leaving it blank changes nothing about the calculation.
Choose your units
Use the Metric / Imperial switch. Metric takes kilograms and centimetres; imperial takes pounds with feet and inches. Switching keeps the calculator honest — it never silently converts a half-typed value.
Enter your weight
Type your current weight in the Weight field. For the most consistent readings, weigh yourself at the same time of day, in similar clothing.
Enter your height
Metric: your height in centimetres in the Height field. Imperial: feet in Height — feet and the remaining inches (0–11.9) in Height — inches.
Press Calculate my BMI
Click Calculate my BMI or press Enter. A quick Honeypot + Time-Trap spam check runs first — real visitors pass instantly. Your result then appears with its category, the healthy weight range for your height, and the steps behind the number. Just below the result, use Save PDF or Save PNG to keep a copy, or share it with the Share to: options — X, Facebook, Pinterest Pin and Email.
Frequently asked questions
Why was my category decided by the rounded number?
The calculator rounds your BMI to one decimal place first — 24.96 becomes 25.0 — and the band is chosen from that rounded value. That matches how BMI is usually reported, and the result card shows the exact unrounded steps so you can always see how close to a boundary you are.
What happens if I leave a field empty or type 0?
Nothing is calculated. The field is highlighted with a short message — for example, “Enter a weight above 0 kg” — because a zero or empty weight or height would produce a meaningless number. Fix the highlighted field and calculate again.
What is a healthy weight for my height?
It is the weight range that puts your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. For someone 175 cm tall that is roughly 56.7 kg to 76.3 kg. Your result card works this range out for your exact height every time.
What is BMI Prime?
BMI Prime is your BMI divided by 25, the top of the healthy band. A Prime of 1.00 means you sit exactly at that boundary; 0.91 means you are at 91% of it. It is a quick way to see how far you are from the upper healthy limit.
Do metric and imperial give the same answer?
Yes, for the same measurements. The imperial formula multiplies by 703 to convert pounds and inches into the metric relationship, so 70 kg at 175 cm and 154.3 lb at 68.9 in both give a BMI of about 22.9.
Why does the calculator check that I'm human?
To keep automated spam from abusing the tool, a Honeypot + Time-Trap check runs when you press Calculate my BMI. Real visitors pass straight through, nothing about the check is sent anywhere, and once you've passed once in this tab, quick re-calculations aren't checked again.
Can I keep or share my result?
Yes. Every result carries your name (if you entered one) and the exact date and time it was calculated. Just below your result, Save PDF downloads it as a PDF file and Save PNG saves it as an image, and Share to: shares your result text and link.
