      3D Volume & Surface Area Formulas

      Standard geometric formulas for common three-dimensional solids.

      3D Solid Volume Formula (V) Total Surface Area (SA)
      Cylinder V = π × r² × h SA = 2πr(r + h)
      Sphere V = (4/3) × π × r³ SA = 4 × π × r²
      Rectangular Box V = l × w × h SA = 2(lw + lh + wh)
      Cube (side a) V = a³ SA = 6a²

      The formula

      Rotational and prismatic volume equations.

      Cylinder & Prism Volume

      V = Base Area × Height (Cylinder: πr²h)

      Any right prism or cylinder has volume equal to the area of its base multiplied by its perpendicular height.

      Sphere Volume

      V = (4 ÷ 3) × π × r³

      Archimedes proved that a sphere occupies exactly two-thirds the volume of its circumscribing cylinder.

      Worked examples

      Worked 3D volume examples.

      Example 1 · Cylinder

      r = 5 cm, h = 12 cm

      Standard cylindrical container.

      CalculationSteps
      Base = π(5²) = 78.54 cm²Circular cross-section.
      V = 78.54 × 12 = 942.48 cm³Equals 0.942 litres.

      942.48 cm³

      Example 2 · Sphere

      Radius r = 6 cm

      Spherical ball volume.

      CalculationSteps
      r³ = 6³ = 216Cube the radius.
      V = (4/3)π(216) = 904.78 cm³Surface area = 452.39 cm².

      904.78 cm³

      Example 3 · Box

      10 × 8 × 6 cm

      Shipping carton volume.

      CalculationSteps
      10 × 8 × 6 = 480 cm³Multiply the three edges.
      SA = 2(80+60+48) = 376 cm²Total surface area.

      480 cm³

      Diameter vs. Radius: If you measured the full width (diameter) of a pipe or tank, divide by 2 before entering the radius.

      Frequently asked questions

      How do I calculate the volume of a cylinder?

      Square the radius r, multiply by height h, and multiply by π (V = πr²h).

      How do I convert cubic centimetres (cm³) to litres?

      Divide cubic centimetres by 1,000 (1,000 cm³ = 1 L).
